Dual Citizenship

Section 8(3) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011 provides
that: every dual citizen shall disclose his/her other citizenship in the
prescribed manner within three months of becoming a dual citizen.


Section 8(4) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011 provides
that: a dual citizen who fails to disclose the dual citizenship in the prescribed
manner commits an offence and shall be liable, on conviction, to a fine not
exceeding five million shillings or imprisonment for a term not exceeding
three years or both.

Requirements of Dual Declaration of Citizenship

  1. Submit online application on www.fns.immigration.go.ke
  2. eFNS pre-filled application Form 3 attested to by a Commissioner of Oaths or Notarized with official stamps and two processing fee payment receipts.
  3. Three (3) current, clear and un-mounted passport size photographs not less than 6 months 
    Note
    – No earing or headgear(no hats).
    – Hair should be away from the face
    – No eyeglasses
  4. Copy of Kenyan passport/ or National Identity Card;
  5. Copy of Proof of applicant’s Kenyan citizenship ( For individuals who have regained Kenya Citizenship, to include a copy of the regaining citizenship letter with your application) ;
  6. Copy of the other country’s National Passport;
  7. Copy of certificate of Naturalization/Citizenship. (If not in English, it must be translated into English and certified by the Issuing Authority or Notarized with official stamps);
  8. For those whose names have changed, application must be accompanied by supporting documents e.g. copy of marriage certificate if through marriage, and Deed Poll & a Gazette Notice for others;
  9. Copy of birth certificate;

Complete application documents to be sent to the Embassy for processing via post or dropped at the Embassy reception during working hours

Voluntary Renunciation of Citizenship

Declaration of Voluntary Renunciation of Kenyan Citizenship proceeds from section 19 (1) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011 which provides that where a Kenyan citizen by birth voluntarily makes a declaration of renunciation of Kenyan citizenship, in the prescribed manner, the Cabinet Secretary shall cause the declaration to be registered.

  2. eFNS pre-filled application Form 6 attested to by a Commissioner of Oaths or Notarized with official stamps and two processing fee payment receipts .
  3. Three(3) current, clear and un-mounted passport size photographs not less than 6 months. 
    Note: – No earings or headgear (no hats)
    – Hair should be away from the face
    – No eyeglasses
  4. Original and copies of Kenyan passport and ID ;
  5. Copy of other country’s passport
  6. Proof of citizenship i.e. citizenship certificate or court decision (translated in English);
  7. Copy of Birth Certificate;
  8. Complete application documents to be sent to the Embassy for processing via post or dropped at the Embassy reception during working hours

Regaining Kenyan Citizenship

What do I need to know?


1. Regaining Kenyan citizenship is done by a person who was a citizen of Kenya
by birth and who ceased to be a citizen of Kenya because he or she acquired
the citizenship of another country before 27th August, 2010.

2. Kenyan citizens by birth who lost their Kenyan citizenship can apply to regain
through https://fns.immigration.go.ke/infopack/citizenship/regaining.

3. Those who lost citizenship should not apply for a Kenyan ID or a passport
until they regain their Kenyan citizenship.


Requirements for Regaining Citizenship:

  1. Verify that you have the required document/pre-requisites and you meet the
    relevant criteria before you apply. Please check Directorate of Immigration’s
    website
  2. Submit an online application via official of the Directorate of Immigration
    Services electronic Foreign Nationals Services (eFNS) portal:
    www.fns.immigration.go.ke
  3. eFNS pre-filled application Form 1 and two processing fee payment receipts.
  4. Three(3) current, clear and un-mounted passport size photographs not less

  5. Copy of Kenyan passport previously held;
  6. Copy of National Identity Card previously held;
  7. Copy of Birth Certificate issued by the Government of Kenya at birth;
  8. Copy of the other country’s National Passport;
  9. Copy of the certificate of naturalization/citizenship. If not in English, it should
    be translated and certified by the Issuing Authority or Notarized with official
    stamps; and
  10. for those whose names have changed, application must be accompanied by supporting documents e.g. copy of Marriage Certificate if through marriage, and Deed Poll & a Gazette Notice for others.
